Hervey Bay Regional Gallery

Art in a Box

In 2007, the Gallery commissioned regional artists to create artwork that expressed their particular techniques, media, themes and approaches to art making.  The result is a “travelling kit” of original artworks, each varying in media, subject and/or technique, that are robust enough for handling by education students of all ages.

Art in a Box aims to provide engaging experiences in the classroom by encouraging artwork handling and rich discussion.  This hands-on interaction with artwork helps children and adults to broaden their understanding and perceptions of art.  It allows more primary and secondary students the opportunity to view and discuss artworks created by artists within their community and beyond.

The artworks include a mangrove-inspired mixed media artwork by Lesley Dahl, a colourful glass bead necklace by Cheryl Dundas-Eiritz, and a work created from found objects by Susan Hutton.  Other artists who have contributed artworks to Art in a Box are Leigh Goonan, Carol Seeger, Valerie McIntosh, Trevor Spohr, Joyce Watson and Ted Watson.

Art in a Box is a valuable resource available for loan to anyone wishing to provide positive learning activities in the classroom. The kit is aimed at the upper primary school level (Years 5 to 7) but can be adapted for other year levels. A lesson plan is available.
