Hervey Bay Regional Gallery

Mud Skippers Corner

Hello' from the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery's best buddies, Skipper the Mudskipper and his adventurous offsider, Muddaline.  This pair of muddy critters hails from the rich, oozy mud flats of the Great Sandy Strait, where they live amongst the shady mangroves.  But their next favourite place to be is here in the gallery, saying 'G'day' to our youngest visitors and having loads of fun exploring the artworks, drawing, painting and creating.

Check out the Mudskippers Club for 9 to 14 year olds, the Little Skippers art adventures for 5 to 8 year olds, and the Pipis Club activities for three to five year olds. Catch up with what they've been doing here.

Look out for the children's activities and art trail booklets when you visit an exhibition, especially in holiday time. You'll find Skipper and Muddaline helping you to see our exhibitions through different eyes.

Plus, there's some great giveaways just for kids when you visit the gallery - ask our friendly reception volunteer for a special mudskipper sticker or a rainbow pencil.

Background (for grown ups' information)

Skipper and Muddaline are the inspiration of Tin Can Bay artist Sarah Mitchell, who was contracted to design a cartoon mascot for Hervey Bay Regional Gallery’s education program.

Sarah finds inspiration for her work in the creatures that inhabit the bush and tidal areas of the Great Sandy Strait, an environment of major significance to the region’s fishing resources, tourism industry and ecological well-being. The characters appear in all promotional material for the gallery’s education program such as activity booklets and other appropriate publications.
