Mudskipper scribblings

Our fishy friends Skipper and Muddaline welcome back our old friends and our new friends to the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery's Mudskippers Club for 2012.

The Mudskippers Club, named after 'you know who' of course, is especially for children in primary and lower secondary school who love looking at and creating visual art.

Muddaline and Skipper Skipper and Muddaline reckon you don't have to be good at drawing or painting to enjoy their special clubs.  They've invited real artists to show you all sorts of different types of ways to make artworks.  You can learn more about drawing and painting but also lots of other fun things, such as making sculptures with all sorts of interesting materials, exploring printmaking techniques, and experimenting with clay.

Plus, you'll also get to hear about the artworks in the gallery's exhibitions, but in ways that kids understand.

Watch this space to get the latest goss and pictures from the Mudskippers Club art adventures, which will be held one Saturday a month, from 9.30am to 11.30am (Little Skippers) and 1pm to 3pm (Mudskippers).  As an "official Mudskipper or Little Skipper", you'll be able to have your thoughts and comments added here as well.

See you in the gallery!

Workshop 3 - 14 April

Jewellery and bead-making with Hervey Bay artist Christine Wardrope

Creating small things from big imaginations was the order of the day when the Little Skippers and Mudskippers checked out the amazing wearable art in Contemporary Wearables '11, a collection of fantastic jewellery pieces from the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery's biennial competition. The children discussed different types of jewellery, examined pieces that took inspiration from nature and talked about how art sometimes contains messages, ideas or stories.

The Little Skippers created their own wearable art, including a collaged pendant for a necklace or bag pal, and paper beads for threading. The Mudskippers experimented with paper bead-making as well as coloured polymer modelling clay to create amazing jewellery decorations.

Workshop 2 - 10 March

Space-age vehicles with Hervey Bay teacher Jo Bunt

A touring exhibition of amazing model cars of futuristic design, called Industrial Desire: Detroit Concept Cars, was the inspiration for this Mudskippers Club session. Both the Mudskippers and Little Skippers got busy designing their own space-age vehicle concept on paper before selecting from a variety of recycled materials from which to bring their creation to life. The final models were amazing!

Cartooning and animation techniques with Gympie artist Jeff Douwes

The touring exhibition, Big Eye: Aboriginal Animations, provided the focus for today's art adventures. Professional cartoon artist Jeff Douwes explained all about his amazing job and what it involved, and took the Little Skippers and Mudskippers through a range of drawing activities and cartooning techniques. The Little Skippers even got to make their own simple but effective animation!
