This body of expressionist paintings has a thematic duality of exploring the human condition alongside the Australian environment. Although these images clearly have emotive qualities, which this Fraser Coast artist enjoys teasing out of paint on canvas, Gerdsen is intent on showing that ‘expressionist’ does not necessarily mean ‘brutely confrontational’. In particular there is an aim to entice and assure younger viewers that realism is not the only way to explore their feelings and creativity.
